MARTINGALE
MARTINGALE (or Double-Up or...) is one of the few infallible systems in existance! You will
win your starting bet every session! That is... if two conditions are met; there is
no table-limit at all and your bankroll is unlimited. If one of the conditions fail, I would say
that this system is close to economical suicide.
The MARTINGALE system is (mainly) used for even chances betting (Red, Black,
Even, Odd, Low, High) and is used in this way:
You start a session by betting some amount, 5 chips. Whenever you win, you collect
your bet and won chips, whenever you lose, your next bet is the double of the lost bet.
If you lose again you double your bet again, until you win. A win is ending a session.
For example, you decide to bet Red only and to start with a 5-chip bet. So;
You bet 5 on Red. Black hits, you lose. You double the lost bet thus betting 10
chips on Red. Black again. You double again; 20 on Red. Red hits - you win! Collect 40 chips
(your 20 chips bet and 20 chips win) and this is the end of the session.

If you now count your chips, you will find that your net win was 5 chips,
the exact amount of your starting bet - you bet 5 + 10 + 20 = 35 and got 40 back making a net
of 5. This is fundamental to this system: If you win, your net will always be the same as your
initial bet. So you put 35 chips on risk for 5... but it could be a lot worse!
Suppose you have seven losses in a row before a hit - this is common, in average there is one every second
day (see SEQUENCES of the EVEN CHANCES in the Test Dept) at a
12-hour a day, two-minutes per spin, casino - so your
betting sequence would be: 5 + 10 + 20 + 40 + 80 + 160 + 320 + 640 = 1275 chips!
(What's your bank-roll like?) Now, your last bet won and you collect a total of... that's right:
1280 chips. You put 1275 chips at risk for a mere 5 (0.39%)? (Are you allowed to bet 640 chips at your
local casino?)
Simply put; the best thing you can do (2nd to avoiding the system) is to limit the system and then have a
LOW limit. I would say that 4 is (more than) adequate as a maximum bet.

Think about it: If you start with one chip only, and lose three bets (1 + 2 + 4) you are seven
chips behind and it will take seven profitable sessions to cover for this single loss. But if
you decide to set a higher limit - say, 16 - you will notice you must cover every loss by a
proportionally larger number of winning sessions. If you lose a bet of 16 you have lost a total
of 31 chips (1 + 2 + 4 + 8 + 16). With a limit of 4 a loss is 7 and, as four such losing sessions will appear in the same
number of sessions as one losing session with a limit of 16, to get even from four such losses
will take 28 winning sessions but you need 31 for a limit of 16. That is; you save yourself three
units every fourth loss, if you select 4 as a limit instead of 16.
If you now can see why you ought to choose a limit of 4 instead of 16, you might like to consider
this: Set the limit to 2 chips max bet! If you lose such a session, you lose 3 chips and two
such losses makes a total of 6 and so you need six winning sessions to cover for two losses, while
limit 4 needs seven for one loss. Therefore you will do yourself a favor selecting a limit of
2 instead of 4.

Another positive effect of lowering the limit, is that you get more chances to win for the
same, or less, chips! If the limit is set to 3, you will lose 7 units if you have three losses
(1 + 2 + 4) for a possible net win of 1, but with a limit of 2 you pay 6 units for four chances (1 + 2 + 1 + 2)
for a possible net win of 2 units!
And here comes: Limit 1. That is, always bet one starting bet wether you win or lose - also known as
"Flat Betting" - needs only one winning session to cover a loss and so two losses,
that will come in the same number of sessions as one loss with limit 2, need two winning
sessions as opposed to limit 2 that needs three.
(Another positive effect of lowering the limit, is that you get more chances to win for the
same, or less, chips...)

Sometimes you hear of different ways to avoid high bets - for example you wait until there have
been 5 Reds in a row and then start betting Black... This does NOT make this system
better as you are, sooner or later, going to hit the streak of losses that will wipe out all your
previous won chips or your bank-roll. Again; see the table mentioned above for looong streaks. You could, of course,
wait for longer streaks before you start betting, but then; how much time do you want to spend
at the casino to make - if you win - another starting bet?
There is also a reversed version of this system called
